Each season, we hold a free Cleat Exchange, hosted at JAX Outdoor Gear. Bring your old outgrown cleats and trade them in for a pair or a more appropriate size. If you don't find a pair, you can pick up a discount certificate for a new pair from JAX. If you don't have a new pair to donate, you can still pick up a used pair...and just consider making a small donation to our financial aid pool.
For the Fall, our cleat exchange will be August 8th (4:00-7:00 pm) and August 9th (10:00 am to 3:00 pm).
JAX is located at 4723 West Lincoln Way Ames, IA 50014
Normal hours at JAX are:
- M-F 9am - 8pm
- Sat 9am - 6pm
- Sun 10am - 6pm
Julie Sen (our New Cleat Exchange Guru) is in need a few people to sit and watch and help a bit. No experience needed! She or the folks at JAX can tell you what to do. Click here to volunteer for an hour or two!
World Cup Festival Camp
Over forty players participated in the club’s World Cup Festival Camp July 14-17th. Players were broken into three training groups and competed in various scrimmage type activities to give them experience at applying their technical skills within game situations. At the end of each session the players from all three groups joined together and competed in a World Cup game culminating in final play-off games on the Thursday...and the 1st place final game that everybody wanted to see in the real World Cup – Brazil vs. Argentina did not disappoint as the teams battled to a 2-2 tie. Not wanting to put the spotlight on one player who would be ridiculed in the world media we decided to crown joint Champions:
Meanwhile the Wooden Spoon game (7th vs. 8th place) was just as hotly contested with Costa Rica outscoring France 5 – 4. The players are pictured celebrating with the coveted Wooden Spoon and are obviously happy despite their 7th place finish.
Full results of the final play-off games:
- 1st place = Brazil 2 France 2
- 3rd Place = Belgium 5 Germany 4
- 5th Place = Colombia 6 Netherlands 3
- 7th Place = Costa Rica 5 France 4
The Ames Soccer Club families, players and coaches mourn the loss of U14 player Timothy Ryan Jenks on June 26, 2014. Thirteen year old Timothy played ASC soccer for about a decade on recreational then competitive teams. Timothy and his family, sister (and twin) Olivia, older brother Chris, mother Cynthia and father, William, have touched the lives of all club members through their involvement as players, parent coaches, and general volunteerism. Our thoughts are of Timothy and of the moments many of us have had the good fortune to share with him. And our hearts go out to Timothy’s family and his friends.
A visitation for Timothy will be held from 5 - 7 pm on Monday June 30 at Adams Funeral Home. The funeral will be 11:00 am Tuesday July 1 at Collegiate Presbyterian Church on West and Sheldon. A luncheon will follow.
The family has only begun to think about an appropriate memorial for Timothy, and requests that please —if you are so inclined — plan on helping then, in lieu of flowers now.
The Jenks' family also wishes to express that "the outpouring of support for our family has been wonderful. We remember him as ours, but we are so glad that he touched so many of you".
Update: A memorial scholarship to recognize graduating 8th graders who live life fully and to help them with expenses related to their extracurricular activities will be established at Ames Middle School.
Direct donations to the memorial scholarship fund may be made by sending a check to the Jenks residence at 3101 Greenwood Road, Ames, IA 50014. Please make checks payable to "Timothy Jenks Memorial Fund".
Iowa Soccer and USSF put on Coaching Training sessions throughout the summer for coaches working with teams age 9 and older called the E-license and the D-license. The former is a one-weekend course and the latter is a two-weekend course that requires that you hold the E-license already. The Ames Soccer Club supports coach training and will reimburse parent coaches for the cost of the courses. The most convenient E-license location will be a course in Gilbert from August 8-10. More information on the courses is available at this link.
If you are interested in attending one of these courses, please contact Gary Eyles at email@example.com.
We need our members' help to run the Kohl's Cup tournament smoothly. No special soccer knowledge is needed and training is about 2 minutes! We need help with things like checking teams in, setting up, cleaning up, parking, and so on.

The Ames Soccer Club has hired Damien Corrieri as its new Assistant Director of Coaching. Corrieri has previously coached with the Club as both a volunteer in the recreational program and as a professional coach in the premier competitive program. Corrieri’s responsibilities include coaching competitive teams, summer camp instruction, winter training programs, and assisting with general player and program development. In addition, Corrieri will be responsible for development and outreach activities. “I am fortunate to be able to serve in a role that allows me to share my passion for soccer” said Corrieri. “I look forward to working with Gary Eyles and the Board of Directors towards improving the soccer experience for the children and youth of our community.”
Corrieri holds a National D license from the United States Soccer Federation, Level 1 & 2 Goalkeeping Diplomas from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), and State of Iowa High School Coaching authorization. He also served two seasons as head coach of the Ankeny Centennial freshman soccer program and one season as head coach for the Iowa State University Women’s Club team.
Gary Eyles is pleased to have Corrieri in this full-time role. “Damien is a dynamic young man who brings new perspectives and has already hit the ground running and begun work on initiatives that will help elevate the soccer experience for current and future players. He is very enthusiastic about coaching and teaching our younger players the proper way to play, and his own thirst for gaining knowledge and experience is contagious,” says Eyles.
Corrieri lives in Ames with his family. His wife, Amber, is Director of Development at Mainstream Living. They have two children; Jordan (11) and Isabella (7). In addition to his professional work, he is an active member of the Ames community. He has served as co-chair for the United Way of Story County’s Day of Caring (2009 & 2010) and Young Leaders Society (2012 & 2013) and was an Ames Jaycees Board member (2008). Corrieri has also been involved with the Octagon Center for the Arts, is a past member of the Young Professionals of Ames, and remains active in the Ames Chamber of Commerce.
We had about 50 folks turn up for Stash the Trash on March 29 to help clean up HYSC. Thanks so much! These two mugs stuck around enough to play king of the mountain afterwards!
Congrats to the U11 Girls Navy team, who finished runners-up in West Des Moines Premier Games Tournament April 5-6th in Des Moines. They went 3-0 in pool play, beat CRSA
in semi-finals and then lost to Omaha FC in the final.
Tryout information is now available for Fall 2104 teams for the U11-U19 age groups. They will take place from June 4 - June 9. Players who were in the U10 level for the 2013-2014 academic/soccer year will need to participate to be placed on appropriate teams. (Players from the U9 age group may also try out to "play up".) Players from current U11-U14 teams will not need to participate in a formal tryout; they will simply need to indicate that they wish to play. High school aged players will all need to try out to establish teams.
Players who did not participate with Ames Soccer Club in the 2013-2014 year are more than welcome to join us for 2014. Current U11-U14 players with clubs other than Ames should contact Gary Eyles to arrange for a tryout.
Sign up for tryouts using the form below, which has the detailed schedule. Tryout fees are $15 before May 23 and $20 thereafter.
Danny Wilson, who has been an active Parent Coach with the Ames Soccer Club, announced to Assistant Director of Coaching Damien Corrieri that Wilson Toyota will generously sponsor the Ames Soccer Club for 2014.
The club is very grateful for the sponsorship. If you our your business is interested in sponsoring the club, please contact Damien.
Our U5-U10 teams play in a league that ASC administers, called the Central Iowa Soccer League (CISL, pronounced "sizzle"). CISL has its own web site, where all the league rules, schedules, and directions to the various clubs' fields can be found.
Visit the CISL web site: http://centraliowasoccer.org
Story County Youth Philanthropy made a generous grant to Ames Soccer Club to be used to help purchase goals for new practice fields that that we have been developing at HYSC. Shown are former ASC player Sarah Wohlsdorf making the award and Assistant Director of Coaching Damien Corrieri receiving the gift on behalf of the club.
Thanks to the SCYP! We are very excited about the ability to preserve our fields and expand our membership with the additional field space that will come on line shortly.
All parent-coaches, staff coaches, board members, and other volunteers are required to fill out a volunteer disclosure form. In short, this is a means for ISA to ensure that we do not have people with inappropriate records working with our children. We thank you for helping with the club and for your cooperation in filling out the mandatory form.
A great chance to see the top clubs in the world play! Real Madrid, Man U, Man City, Liverpool, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Roma, and Olimpiacos will all be playing in the US. Tickets are on sale now. Visit http://internationalchampionscup.com/ to get yours!
